Honouring Your Hormones Over the Holidays

A gentle guide to staying grounded, nourished, and connected this festive season.

December can be a magical time, full of food, family, fun… and, let’s be honest, a little bit of overwhelm. Between the social events, disrupted routines, emotional triggers, and sweet temptations, it’s no wonder your nervous system (and hormones) might be feeling the heat.

But what if this year, you approached the holidays differently?

Not with dread, restriction, or burnout, but with softness, presence, and a little hormone know-how.

Willpower Isn’t the Problem

If you’ve ever told yourself, “I just need more discipline,” or “I’ll get back on track in January,” you’re not alone. But let’s reframe:

This season isn’t about failing or fixing… it’s about flowing.

Your hormones (especially dopamine, serotonin, insulin, and cortisol) respond to more than just food. They respond to:

  • Connection - Time with people who nourish you

  • Joy - Moments of laughter, music, and beauty

  • Rest - Choosing slowness instead of constant hustle

So no, enjoying pavlova at Christmas lunch isn’t a failure. It might just be a little dopamine hug your brain needs. Let’s lose the guilt.

How to Support Your Body (Without the Stress)

  1. Tune in daily
Ask: What do I actually need today?
Is it protein? Water? A walk? A deep breath before the next thing?

  2. Balance your blood sugar
Anchor indulgences with protein, fibre, and fat. This keeps your energy, mood, and cravings more stable (and your hormones happier).

  3. Prioritise what feels good, not what looks good
Choose movement, food, and plans that feel nourishing, not performative. Let go of pressure to be “on” all the time.

Let This Be the Year You…

  • Trust your body instead of judging it

  • Say no without guilt

  • Rest without earning it

  • Celebrate with presence, not perfection

Your hormones thrive on rhythm, not rigidity. And sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is grace.
